Why We Created The Bitter Student
If you have not yet discovered, college is certainly everything it’s cracked up to be. From the nights that turn into mornings, to the timeless memories created with friends – college is exhilarating, to say the least. For most of us, this chapter of life has flown by, and it feels just like yesterday that our freshman year began.
College is an exuberant journey overall, but has also brought many difficult times.
As students, we have seen firsthand the many challenges that face our generation.
Since 2002, tuition rates have risen 49% nationwide, 1 in 10 college students confess to having considered suicide, and older generations have stereotyped Millennials as “lazy, entitled, and coddled.”
We have seen other students struggle to find themselves, discover their purpose, and tackle the many curveballs life throws at them.
Unfortunately, the leaders at freshman orientation didn’t provide us with a manual to navigate all of the shitty times that result in feelings of frustration, defeat, and bitterness.
After some students got together at Birmingham-Southern College (those students being us), we all desired to make a real difference in our generation’s lives. So we set out to build a community of students, who feel both inspired and uplifted.
Thus, The Bitter Student was born.
Our purpose is to use this space to champion the authentic voices of our generation: creative, intelligent, fun, passionate, curious, and determined. It’s a place where we use our bitterness and frustration to drive change while reminding students that even though failure is sometimes inevitable – success and fulfillment are always achievable.
We would like to invite you to join our community, and we hope you’ll spread the word to other bitter students. Help us find the people whose stories need telling, or tell your own, because it is through stories that we understand each other and ourselves.
Here at the Bitter Student, our goal is for you to stray from the path that has been prescribed to you by someone else. We want you to defeat fear, and to continue embarking upon your unique journey. With faith and with the experiences of the accomplished adventurer that you are - you, and you alone – will write the story that you were meant to tell. The world needs your story because the world needs your voice. Consequentially, you will be able to inspire others to break their own status quo. Yours are stories that need to be told!
